Certificate in National Preparedness and Homeland Security
Nonprofit Sector

In a crisis, the nonprofit sector often is called upon to amplify or extend work done by public or private sources. In some cases, such as work done by the Red Cross or religious relief organizations, nonprofits take the lead in responding to human needs when disaster strikes.

The role of nonprofits and their importance in identifying and serving special populations, such as children and the elderly, makes their inclusion in preparedness planning essential.

The Pittsburgh region has one of the highest per capita allotments of nonprofit support to local civic, cultural, educational, and scientific institutions. The certificate program taps professionals from these agencies and others outside Pittsburgh for their expertise. It also helps develop the capacity of nonprofit leaders to serve their communities in a crisis.
